On Jan. 22, 2025, NYC Second Chance Rescue responded to a call from a foster parent who had discovered a severely malnourished puppy wandering the halls of a Bronx apartment building. Volunteers transported the emaciated puppy to the rescue's partner veterinary hospital for care.
Veterinarians diagnosed the puppy with malnutrition, anemia, low protein levels, enamel hypoplasia, and a urinary tract infection. Malnutrition in puppies significantly impairs their immune systems, making them more vulnerable to infections. The puppy's condition was horrific. She was vomiting and weak. "With just one look at her, you can feel her suffering," NYC Second Chance Rescue wrote on Facebook.

The puppy, now named Baby Gina, is being closely monitored to prevent refeeding syndrome, a life-threatening condition that can occur when food is reintroduced too quickly after a period of starvation.

At this time, Baby Gina is tolerating feedings and showing initial signs of recovery. She has received several new sweaters that will keep her warm and stylish as she gains weight.
